Libate and Learn Ep 21: Separating Fact from Fiction

October 13, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Synapse Libate and Learn Ep 21: Separating Fact from Fiction

Separating fact from fiction has never been more difficult – or more important – in this time of instant information overload. As an information consumer, how can we know what is accurate or true? How will we know when a social media thread is authentic or generated by a bot? What is the relationship between human researchers and artificial intelligence to monitor information and call out inconsistencies?

Join us for a discussion with Aaron Sharockman, Executive Director of Politifact and Dr. Giovanni Luci Ciampaglia, Assistant Professor in USF’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering. PolitiFact is a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others who speak up in American politics. It is now part of the Poynter Institute, a nonprofit school for journalists based in St. Petersburg, Fla. Founded in 2007 at the St. Petersburg Times, Politifact won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2008 election. Dr. Ciampaglia’s research is dedicated to information quality in cyber-human systems, in particular trustworthiness and reliability of information in intelligent systems, and in social media mining.

Seating is limited to make time for plenty of Q&A. Reserve your space now.

To facilitate deeper discussion please pose a question for our moderator and panelists within the EventBrite registration form.

*Libate is merely a suggestion. Consider this is more of a virtual social, educational, networking, happy hour. From Kombucha to Ketel One, all forms of libation are welcome.
